Hingham Yacht Club has a long history of yacht racing amongst its members. Annually, HYC hosts the Commodore Ethan W. Hitchcock Trophy, in accordance with the deed of gift from past Commodore Hitchcock and his wife. This event is a distance race starting in Nantasket Roads and following a course as determined by the Race Committee based on the conditions of the day with the intention that all competitors may return in time for a late afternoon BBQ at the Club.
Hingham Yacht Club member yachts also make up a healthy portion of the Hingham Bay Racing (HBR) fleet. HBR is an independent organization which hosts twilight and weekend races for yachts with valid EZ Racing Rule certificates mid May through late September. HBR hosts weekend races such as Circle the Lights Race, Solstice Regatta, and the Chowder Cup as well as weekly twilight races on Wednesday nights throughout the season.
Another popular event with HYC yachts is the Hull Yacht Club Great Chase Race, a pursuit race held annually in mid to late September which emphasizes fun and finishing in time for a great party on the deck at Hull YC. The Great Chase Race historically hosts one of the largest fleets of racing yachts in Massachusetts Bay annually.
HYC members are also known to seek the thrill and adventure of racing their yachts in some of the most historic and challenging offshore distance racing events in the region such as the Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race and the Newport Bermuda Race.
The Rhodes 19 fleet is the most active one-design class in Hingham Bay.
Fleet members can be found racing on Thursday nights just off the Club, or in combined fleet races with nearby Hull Yacht Club. Equally fun for day sailing, the fleet participants also can be found cruising around the bay every weekend. The fleet is well known for its camaraderie and leading participation in all facets of sailing around the bay.
Laser sailing at Hingham Yacht Club is a chance for adults to play in their very own one-design dinghy.
The tradition of junior sailing at Hingham Yacht Club is rich and storied.
We are proud to have turned out generations of accomplished sailors, many of whom have won national honors and awards. We continue to build upon that tradition today by teaching seamanship and sportsmanship in the hope that all of our juniors will become life-long sailors.
Hingham Yacht Club's very popular Women on Water (WOW) fleet brings our women sailors together for evening sailing aboard Rhodes 19s in a relaxed and social environment. Each sail features a planned adventure on the water, such as a scavenger hunt, “big boat” night, or poker run. In inclement weather, the group engages in dockside activities including nautically themed discussions reviewing sail trim, on-the-water safety protocols, reading navigation marks, tying knots, and party games. At the end of each session, the ladies gather for socializing and sunset viewing on the deck.
Learn to Sail is designed for beginner adult member sailors to meet others and become more confident with sailing and seamanship. This program uses Rhodes 19s owned by Club members for instruction in mixed groups.
