Hingham Yacht Club has a long history of yacht racing amongst its members. Annually, HYC hosts the Commodore Ethan W. Hitchcock Trophy, in accordance with the deed of gift from past Commodore Hitchcock and his wife. This event is a distance race starting in Nantasket Roads and following a course as determined by the Race Committee based on the conditions of the day with the intention that all competitors may return in time for a late afternoon BBQ at the Club
Hingham Yacht Club member yachts also make up a healthy portion of the Hingham Bay Racing (HBR) fleet. HBR is an independent organization which hosts twilight and weekend races for yachts with valid EZ Racing Rule certificates mid May through late September. HBR hosts weekend races such as Circle the Lights Race, Solstice Regatta, and the Chowder Cup as well as weekly twilight races on Wednesday nights throughout the season.
Another popular event with HYC yachts is the Hull Yacht Club Great Chase Race, a pursuit race held annually in mid to late September which emphasizes fun and finishing in time for a great party on the deck at Hull YC. The Great Chase Race historically hosts one of the largest fleets of racing yachts in Massachusetts Bay annually.
HYC members are also known to seek the thrill and adventure of racing their yachts in some of the most historic and challenging offshore distance racing events in the region such as the Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race and the Newport Bermuda Race.
