North Channel Challenge

The North Channel Challenge (a.k.a. Confrontation) is a FUN race between the Manchester YC and the Hingham YC. The boats sail under cruising canvas and are scored under their PHRF rating. This year there was a 22-boat turn out and a great party at the HYC after.

The start is always in Boston's North Channel at Finn's Ledge R "2". The finish this year was at the Bumpkin Island Shoal Buoy.

Hingham's team was made up of Bill Collins, Jeff Kent, Brian Curtis, Conrad Langenhagen, Kirk Brown, Steve Bearden, Peter Bishop, Brian McPhillips, Steve Esielonis and David Calnan. There was a light NW breeze at the downwind start. Jeff Kent led around the first two marks. As the breeze picked up, however, the bigger boats from Manchester (a J/160 and a J/124) hunted him down. These three were first boats across the finish line, BUT this is a PHRF race so after handicaps were applied, the smaller boats had their way in the light air day.

The first five boats from each club determine the Team score; low point wins. Hingham took 1st, 2nd, 3d, 4th and 7th; Manchester took 5th, 6th, 8th, 10th and 11th. Hingham's total of 17 topped MYC's 40 points. Congratulations to all Skippers and Crews!

The HYC and the MYC have a wonderful relationship, sharing events and moorings throughout the summer. If you have a cruising boat please strongly consider joining this growing fun group. MYC comes to Hingham in June; HYC goes to Manchester mid-summer; the North Channel Challenge comes in September. Hope to see you there!
